13 GLOSSARY

The following technical terms and abbreviations are used in this document.

Application launcher

The application that enables the user to launch other applications and to launch the Control panel. Available via a hardware key in Softkey style. In Pen style it is available from the rightmost icon of the status bar in and possibly even available on a hardware key.

Application menu

The menu pane in a UIQ view.

Application space

The main view area of an application, below the application title bar and above the softkey/ button bar and status bar. Also known, more technically, as client area. Many of the built-in applications are based around two standard view layouts: a list view and a detail view.

Base view

The first view of any UIQ application; displayed when that application is opened from the application launcher. This view is normally a list view.

Busy message

A flashing message from an application, in the middle of the screen, aligned to the right-hand side of the screen, indicating that processing is happening, though the user can neither see visible signs of progress, nor interrupt the processing.

Button bar

Optionally associated with an application view, below the application space and above the status bar: contains buttons to switch between views, to confirm that the user has finished with a detail view, or other button action. Views in applications using Pen style require a button bar.

Category menu

The menu controlling category selection or filtering in a UIQ list or a detail view.

ACTION hardware key – Center softkey

The most important hardware key. After selecting an item, pressing the ACTION hardware key opens the item in detail view. Some dialogs have a default button, which is also activated by pressing the ACTION hardware key.

DCIM - Digital Camera Images

DCIM stands for Digital Camera Images and is used in digital cameras for managing picture files.

Default behavior

The default behavior describes what happens to, for example, a dialog if the user switches to another application while a dialog is opened. Normally the dialog saves changes and closes.

Default button

If a default button is present in a dialog, that button is activated by pressing the ACTION hardware key. The default button in a dialog has a darker border around it.

Detail view

The detail view is opened from the base view. It provides detailed information for one specific item at the time.

Direct Navigation Link (DNL)

DNLs are used to navigate directly from one application to another.

Entry

An item maintained by an application, for instance, a contact maintained by the Contacts application.

Infoprint

A short-lived message from an application to the user indicating that something has happened. It is displayed in a text box at the top right of the screen. Sometimes referred to as info-message.

Information dialog

Dialog showing the user some information. It has a Continue button.

LED

Light Emitting Diode: A semiconductor device that emits visible light when an electric current passes through it. It requires very low power and an example is the indicator of a mobile phone to show that it is turned on.

List view

A view that displays items in a list. In Pen style a single pen tap can be used to select and open an item unless the list view makes use of a highlighted layout. In that case, the first pen tap will open the highlighted layout. The base view is normally a list view.

MIME - Multi-Purpose Internet Mail Extensions

The UIQ messaging application has support for MIME. This is an extension of the original Internet email protocol that lets people use the protocol to exchange different kinds of data files on the Internet: audio, video, images and application programs, as well as the ASCII handled in the original protocol, SMTP.

Query dialog

Query dialogs ask the user a simple question. They Yes have and No buttons, in that order.

Scroll bar

Scroll bars are normally used in dialogs or within components when necessary.

Softkey

Hardware keys that correspond to three textual labels located at the bottom of the screen, the softkey bar.

Softkey bar

All views and dialogs in applications using Softkey style require a softkey bar. There are two softkeys: Left softkey (LS), Right softkey (RS) and an Action key with a softkey label.

Status bar

Displays status information such as battery charge and signal strength and notifies the user of other events, for example, incoming messages. The content of the status bar is determined by the mobile phone manufacturer.

Tab

A control that allows the user to change between aspects of a dialog or a detail view, for instance, basics, notes and picture.

UI

User Interface.

A view displayed by a UIQ application, including base view, list view, detail view.
